Recent Project: Designing and Renovating a Family Beach Retreat
It was a late winter morning when I first visited the site of one of our recent renovation projects. Just north of Boston, sitting on a beautiful ocean-front beach, was a circa 1950s cottage. A beach retreat lovingly passed down through generations. This was a summer home rich with family memories, you could feel the joyful family history as it seemed to warm the home even on the cold winter day when I first toured the home with my client.
A home filled with love and memories.
Although filled with family memories this home was also filled with dark old paneling, worn floorboards, and a dated dark galley kitchen that had no view of this home’s beautiful beachfront location. My client was ready to make some changes the space, and I was thrilled to be able to design and renovate this unique property for her. and her family.
Drastic changes were needed in the floor plan to take advantage of the beautiful views. I stayed mindful to keep some of the original features as it was a property with a lot of family memories and history.
“I stayed mindful to keep some of the original features”
The first change made was the design of a new open and up-to-date kitchen, to create this new space the back wall of the original galley kitchen had to be removed in the kitchen now became open to the rest of the living space, a dream that my homeowner had been thinking about for some time. I went to work designing the space keeping some of the original elements that were important to my homeowner, but creating a light airy open, sun-filled beach home. I created a large island and added up-to-date kitchen features beautiful quartz countertops, new appliances, beautiful white painted bead-boarded cabinetry, this added a casual feel to the kitchen and tied in with the older architecture of this home.
On a small wall and the adjacent living space, we created a fireplace feature with beautiful marble tile. This tied in beautifully to the marble backsplash in the adjacent kitchen and helped this smaller-sized beach cottage look large and more spacious. We also created a laundry room space, with custom cabinetry for storage, and renovated the adjacent bathroom, and the master bedroom and bathroom space. I took my color cues from the beautiful views provided for each room, which created a seamless flow between interior and exterior spaces.
My team got right to work creating a beautifully renovated space for new generations of this family to enjoy for years to come. The cottage was furnished with a mixture of vintage pieces from the original home and a few new pieces that will provide comfortable seating.
On the recent visit to the home, it was so nice to see my lovely client and her family enjoying their newly designed and renovated home.
Until Next Time,
Gia
