It's Not Just Visual - 3 Unexpected Ways A Room's Design Can Appeal To Your Senses

Interior design is most often thought of as a visual art. An art that involves creating a room or a visually appealing space. However, designers create spaces that are much more than just visually appealing. Interior designers also aim to create spaces that function well, solve space issues, and appeal to many of the client’s other senses.

Creating spaces that appeal to some of your other senses can enhance the experience of a visually absorbing, professionally designed space.

Here are a few ways designers create spaces to appeal to all of your senses.
Add rich color.

1-Touch

Use a combination of fabrics that create different experiences when those fabrics are touched. For instance, a luxurious silk pillow or a mohair pillow on a beautiful velvet sofa. Using fabrics that have different tactile experiences can provide additional interest and luxury in a space. The feel of luxurious silk is much different than the feel of rich velvet. Not only do we see the mixture of fabrics, but we feel the soft velvet or the cool silk.

2-Sound

Sounds that are heard in the space are also an important part of experiencing a room. Making allowances for soundproofing, if needed, or ways of blocking out traffic noise etc., are all important parts of the experience of the space. Also, there are ways to enhance the sounds of a room. For example, my office looks out into a courtyard where I have a beautiful, three-tiered fountain. When I open the window in my office, I can hear the trickle of the water, which is very peaceful and it dissolves any traffic noise. Soothing sounds enhance the experience of the space. Add the ability to stream music in your room using sound or speaker systems. This allows you to control the whole experience of the sound in the space

3-Smell

The smell of a space is something that is ever-changing and has a lot to do with your reaction to the room. The smell of a musty carpet or pet odor in her room can outweigh a beautiful design. From a design perspective, choosing stain-resistant fabrics can help with the room’s durability so that upholstery, carpet, and furnishings can be easily cleaned. This can help to tone down any bad odors that could result in your home. Regular maintenance of fabrics and surfaces keeps everything smelling fresh and clean. Some quick ways to enhance any room’s smell would be adding candles, fresh flowers, or diffusers. Once any bad odor is eliminated, this could be a great way to enhance the experience of the entire space.
