How To Make A Luxurious Bed
ONE
It’s all about the sheets – Buy the highest quality sheet that you can afford. I like using a cotton sateen. Yes, the higher the thread count, the nicer the sheet, but I found that that’s not always the case over the years. I like to feel them to be sure they are not too rough. Heavier cotton is my favorite.
TWO
Putting on your sheets – First, you would put your fitted sheet on the bed. This could be over a mattress cover, a mattress pad, or even a fitted feather bed if you want an extra layer of coziness. Then you would put on the top sheet (the flat sheet). I lay the flat sheet down on the bed right side down, and I line the top edge with the top of the mattress; then, when you fold it down, you’ll be seeing the right side of the sheet. I don’t turn this down until after I put on the next layer.
THREE
Blanket or coverlet – This will be the next layer. In the winter, this could be a heavier blanket or a duvet with a feather bed in it. In the summer, it could be just a blanket or a coverlet. This will go on the right side up. Again the top would align with the top of the mattress right on top of the top sheet. Then I would fold over both of those layers so that you see the right side of the top sheet once it’s folded down. I usually fold this down space-wise, according to how many pillows I plan on putting on the bed because I want to see that lovely edge of the sheet.
FOUR
The next step in my process includes a comforter, a blanket or throw that I would fold, or bunch up on the bottom of the bed; this adds dimension and an extra layer of luxury. I do this step even when using a comforter flat on the bed. In the winter, I find I use both of these layers. As a design element, it adds to the look of the bed as well.
FIVE
Then my throw pillows. I usually take my regular bed pillows and stand them up in the back depending on the size and height of your headboard, or if you don’t have a headboard, my method for these pillows could differ. For the sake of this demonstration, I’m putting the bed pillows behind the decorative pillows standing up against the headboard. Then I’m layering my decorative pillows standing in front. Depending on the size of your bed, you could do various amounts of layers consisting of shams, euros ( large square pillows), or any decorative pillows. In the video included with this post, I used a series of euros and custom decorative pillows stacked upright on a queen bed. There are no hard and fast rules for this. However, as a designer, I often use custom pillows to mix and match the sizes and shapes of these pillows. Creating custom bedding also allows me to use various fabrics to create just the look that I would like for the design that I’m creating. These details are custom, including all of the trim, sizing, placement, and filling. These details are decided early on in the design process, sourced from various trade vendors; this is how designers get the beautiful luxurious pillows that perfectly coordinate with space.
Until Next Time,
