Transforming An Awkward Space: Second Floor Sitting Area

In many homes, there are awkward or unusual spaces. While these spaces give character to the home, they also cause confusion about how to use and furnish them.

This client’s home had one of those areas: a large landing area on the second floor. It was adjacent to the master bedroom and was used as a pass-through. Upon completion of the stairway renovation, we painted the space. For a while, our team even used it for storage while working on other rooms.

Once the second-floor renovation was complete, it was time to reimagine this space.

Creating a Cozy Conversation Area

My client really wanted this space to have a clear direction or function. It had always been just an area where they walked through or stored items.

It had so much more potential.

In designing the space, I created a small sitting area. Since it was adjacent to the master bedroom, this made sense. And, it gave the homeowners a semi-private area in an otherwise open home. The room’s smaller scale also gave us a place to create a cozy area where the homeowners could sit, read, or chat, while enjoying their morning coffee. It provided a wonderful little escape from the rest of the home’s activity.

Turning A Pass-through Into Something Useful

First, we replaced the long upper window with one that better matched the home’s architecture. This new window also allowed for more natural light in the sitting area. Then we framed the window with beautiful custom treatments.

For furnishings, we selected a few sophisticated yet comfortable furniture pieces, including a custom ottoman and a perfectly sized cabinet to add some storage to the space. These pieces were just the right size to accommodate foot traffic from the stairway to the bedroom while creating a conversation area that was private and comfortable.

For color, I continued the color scheme from the hallway and first floor right up through the open area at the top of the stairway.

A few of the other design elements included:

  • Replacing the undersized light fixture over the stairway with a beautiful polished nickel chandelier.
  • Repeating this polished nickel look when framing the art pieces and some of the other accessories.
  • Choosing beautiful botanical prints and a large photography piece that we had custom-framed.
  • Adding greenery to soften the angular architecture of this space.
  • Designing custom pillows to complement the custom drapery in the stairway.
  • Adding an area rug to ground the space and define the furniture grouping.

From Storage to Special

The result is a soft, calming space. This area is now used daily by my clients, and it has become one of their favorite spaces in the home.

Until next time,
