6 Ways To Refresh Your Dining Room Before Your Next Dinner Party

Have you had a dinner party or tried to entertain in your current dining room space only to find it doesn’t suit what you want to do? Maybe it’s too small or doesn’t quite look the way you want it to. So, you decide to do a full renovation and can’t wait to improve the space with treatments, woodwork, furnishings, custom window treatments, and beautiful fabrics. But what if I told you that with just a few quick improvements, you could make a huge difference in the space even before completing a dream dining room renovation?

Let’s consider a few of the ways you can refresh that dining room quickly, just in time for your next dinner party. Here are a few well-thought-out tips to improve the look of your space without making a lot of random purchases that won’t be reused when you finally renovate.
Add rich color.

Remove the undersized area rug.

If you are going to have an area rug under a dining room table, make sure the chairs are on the rug when you pull them out to sit. This is one of the biggest design mistakes I see in dining room spaces. An undersized area rug can make a room look a bit disjointed. You are better off with no area rug than to have one that’s not properly sized for the room and the proportions of the table.

Add a new piece of artwork.

If you have empty walls in your dining room, you can make a quick impact in the space with a large piece of art. This will quickly add a focal point in the space and help it look a bit more complete. The purchase of a piece of artwork could also be an inspiration piece for the rest of the dining room design if you decide to do the space at a later time.

Remove any random furniture pieces that have found their way into your dining room.

Sometimes, odd furniture pieces seem to somehow find their way into a dining room space. Whether this is a room that’s not used often or your dining room space is open to the rest of your living area, I have noticed a tendency for these areas to accumulate pieces of furniture that people are not sure what to do with. It could be a random inherited piece of furniture you don’t want to get rid of or other pieces that don’t fit anywhere. For a quick improvement in the space, move these pieces out of the dining room. Knowing that when you do design or renovate the space, you will be able to select furniture pieces that are proportioned and useful to the space. If the dining table is all you have in your dining room, that is better than having furniture pieces that are not useful or not proportioned to your existing table or room.

Add rich color.

Add greenery.

A tall tree in the corner of the room can do a lot for a space, especially a dining room. If you don’t have a lot of furniture in the space, you could quickly soften the look of the room and make it look a bit more finished and filled out by adding a tall piece of faux or real greenery. This can also soften the hard edges of dining spaces since this is an area that will not be softened with a lot of upholstered pieces. Introducing an organic element to the space is a very easy way to freshen up the room.

The choice of a lighting fixture in a dining room is crucial.

Not just the style of the fixture, but the size and shape of the fixture, can make or break the design of the space. If you don’t love or don’t have a dining room chandelier, or a ceiling fixture, here’s a way you can pull attention away from it until you find one that fits perfectly in the space. If you have some sort of a sideboard or other piece of furniture in the space, you can add a table lamp or a pair of table lamps to light the space. There are even small battery-powered options and beautiful table lamps that can be used on your dining room table. This would create a nice ambiance, light the space, and draw attention away from the chandelier or lack of it.

Put your attention on the table when entertaining.

Whether you prefer to entertain formally or informally put your attention to the table. Even if it’s a simple arrangement of fresh flowers and some stacked plates. A table set with mixed-matched china or fine china can be a beautiful display, making your guest feel welcomed. This is where your guest’s attention will focus.

Until Next Time,
