When starting a design project, I suggest first doing an assessment of your possessions. Go through your home and identify items that you absolutely love. Look for these items in the room you are currently working on as well as other areas in the home. Many treasured items have been found on a back shelf or in a closet, just waiting to take center stage in your home.
These items could be an heirloom quilt, a china collection, a cherished glass vase or an antique piece of furniture. These items could provide inspiration for you and your designer in creating a well thought out design plan. When identifying item that you love, sometimes a pattern or a color scheme starts to suggest itself. Sometimes a piece of china can inspire the design of an entire home. It is so important that your home be a reflection of you; therefore find comfort in surrounding yourself with things that you cherish.
Also make a list of anything that you really don’t like, and would like to replace or eliminate this will help in the creation of your new design. Figuring out what you like and dislike in your current space is the first step in creating a warm and inviting design. A well designed space will reflect your passion.
