The classic combination of blue and white has always been a design staple in my own home. This is how it started……….
About 20 years ago I purchased my first piece of blue and white china at a New England flea market. As a lover of porcelain china and passionate designer, I was drawn to its English pattern and rich cobalt blue color which contrasted on the porcelain white background. Little did I know, that this one plate would not only start a vast collection but would also create a shared bond with my mother. Mom quickly fell in love with my ever growing blue and white and decided to jump in with both feet and begin a collection of her own. My Mother and I spend countless days exploring antique stores, flea markets, department stores and yard sales, expanding our ever growing collections and evaluating each and every piece to see which one of us would adopt our most recent finds. A rare English pattern or a dime store variety, we mixed patterns and styles until eventually we reached a point where we both became satisfied with our vast collection of pieces. We each then turned our attention towards decorating our homes with our finds, always anxious to see how each other displayed our collections differently every time one of us moved. We also enjoyed sharing photos back and forth and the exciting discussions about our latest blue and white styling projects and table settings. My Mother passed away this year and after dispersing many of her treasured blue and white pieces to family members , the bulk of her collection is now being unpacked at my current home, each piece beautiful,l but also a reminder of many fun filled days sharing this passion that started the day I picked up that first dusty but beautiful old plate.
Blue and white is once again trending, and like any classic color combination, we are now seeing some beautiful fresh versions of this decorating favorite. Beautiful contemporary geometric blue and white fabrics and traditional blue and white porcelain are now flooding the market place. I hope you will enjoy seeing and using blue and white, I know I will certainly enjoy working with this very familiar classic color scheme.
