Should I Buy a New Sofa or Reupholster My Existing Sofa?
1.
What is your goal? If saving money by not purchasing new is the main reason that you are considering reupholstering a current piece of furniture, think again. By the time you purchase new fabric and add the reupholstering labor, which sometimes includes re-building foam areas or cushions, the cost of reupholstering can often be higher than purchasing a new piece of furniture.
2.
Is your existing sofa a quality piece of furniture? If cost is not the issue, another good reason to consider reupholstering your current sofa is that you have a quality, well-made piece and would like to keep it. If you like the design of your current sofa and the scale and size of the piece work well with your space and other furniture, then reupholstering that sofa could be a good choice.
3.
Is your current sofa or furniture a sentimental piece? Sometimes you just have an attachment to a piece of furniture. Whether it was an antique piece or a new piece that you really loved when you purchased it, these could be reasons that you decide to choose reupholstering over purchasing new.
4.
Do you have access to a highly-skilled upholsterer? Reupholstering is a skill and a craft that is best left to the pros. If you don’t have access to an experienced upholsterer, it is best to go with a new piece of furniture.
5.
Do you desire a highly customized look? The advantage of reupholstering an old piece is that you have an opportunity to select a specific fabric, trim, and other design details for your piece. This could make it much easier if you’re furnishing an entire room and you would like to use specific fabrics to tie everything in together. However, this could be done with a new piece as well that is a custom build. So look at both options when thinking about custom details to see what is right for your project.
6.
Do you love the scale and shape of your current piece of furniture? If you don’t, reupholstering won’t improve or change it. It’ll just give you an updated version of the same piece. This is definitely a situation where you want to go with a new piece of furniture. If the scale and shape of your current sofa are great, by all means, explore the highly customized look that you can get by re-upholstering.
Until Next Time,
