5 Reasons To Hire An Interior Design When Building A New Home
When you decide to build a new home, it can be very exciting. The ability to customize your living space by building exactly what you want is something that many people look forward to. However, a few weeks into the process, you’ll realize that there’s a lot more to the process than you ever realized.
Creating a cohesive look and a well-designed space involves a lot more than a few Pinterest boards. Nor is it about selecting a few finishes, or visualizing your dream kitchen.
There are hundreds of details that need to be specified in a new home. Many of these details are things that you might not have thought about until somewhere in the process your builder asks you for that decision, and they need it very quickly so that the building process can continue.
You might suddenly decide to begin randomly googling for ideas to make decisions independently, leading to a fragmented look in your home after it’s completed. In the process of building the many layers involved in putting a home together, there is a certain order in which things are done.
However, if you make decisions in that order when it comes to design elements, you will quickly find that you are in big trouble when it comes to the design of your space. Many times, you get to a certain point in the project, look back, and say,” Oh, if I knew I was going to do this, maybe I wouldn’t have made that other decision early on.” Now, it’s too late or too costly to change it. This is normal and there are many things that homeowners just don’t know when going into the process of building a home. It’s not the homeowner’s fault, and we have a whole industry that oversimplifies the design and build process, marketing everything as “do-it-yourself” projects.
This oversimplification sells lots of products, but as I see when going into many homes, a lot of disappointed homeowners often spend more money trying to figure out the process than hiring a professional. It’s hard to know what you don’t know. But unfortunately learning all of the many details and intricacies of building and designing a home can be a very expensive way of figuring this out. Savvy clients understand that they don’t have the time, know-how, or resources to learn how to be a professional interior designer while they are building their homes.
Especially when the overall finished product is something they want to be spectacular.
Even if you do this from the beginning, you might not ever realize all of the pitfalls and potential costly disasters you have avoided by hiring a professional from the start of the project.
There are so many benefits to hiring an interior designer at the start of a project, and here are just a few:
- Before the home is even built, a designer can look at a set of plans and be able to look at how the interior of the home will function, and point out potential design issues that might not be realized until the home is built.
- Designing an overall look and feel of the space so that the home design has a cohesive, well-designed look.
- A designer knows all the design decisions that have to be made when building a new home, the order in which those design decisions will be made, and has systems in place to organize all of the decisions being made so they can be shared with your builder.
- Designers know home products. Since designers work with these products every day, they are familiar with products you might not know about. Designers also know about the quality of different products and can help you decide where to economize or where to splurge when it comes to product purchases.
- Designers can visualize the space right down to the smallest details. Knowing how your furniture is going to be positioned in the new home or how finishes and materials will work in your new home can save you thousands of dollars in changes after the home is built.
These are just a few of the many benefits of hiring a designer when building a new home.
Until Next Time,
